Our growing principles

How LUCO is grown, roasted and made.

An unlikely bean, grown closer to home. Here’s how LUCO goes from a Lincolnshire field to your favourite mug.

1 · Innovation

New possibilities for lupin beans

LUCO was born from Lupin Loop, an Innovate UK-funded project exploring new possibilities for lupins, from how they’re grown to how we use them in food and drink.

We’re bringing that spirit of discovery to your daily brew, turning British-grown blue lupin beans into a naturally caffeine-free coffee alternative. A little curiosity. A whole new way to brew.

2 · Traceability

Grown closer to home

Lupins thrive across temperate regions, including the UK. Ours are grown in Lincolnshire, supporting British agriculture and giving us a shorter, more local supply chain.

Blue lupins can grow in cooler conditions, making them well suited to growing in Britain including its colder, wetter regions.

3 · Sustainability

Clever little bean

Lupins work with bacteria in their roots to fix nitrogen from the air. This can reduce the need for nitrogen fertiliser and benefit the crops grown after them.

Our packaging is 100% recyclable, made from LDPE.

4 · Quality

Quality, crafted by experts

A great brew starts with people who know their craft. That’s why we enlisted Andrew, our roaster and a Leeds coffee shop owner, and Wani, who grows, sources, processes and imports Malawian coffee.

Together, they helped us put quality first and develop a roast with coffee lovers in mind. Roasted right here in Leeds, West Yorkshire, in a Golden Coffee Roaster, our lupin beans took 14 attempts, plenty of patience and a fair few cups to get just right.

Taste the principles for yourself.
